The Lonely Mermaid

each night as the stars twinkled in the black heavens
the mermaid surfaced scanning the shore ever looking
for a man, the man she waited for each night.
her heart yearning for him. with such sadness and melancholy
love sick for the impossible
but love she did and love he did
they meet in the waves as darkness covers them.
a love so true, so real and yet so sad and empty
never could he join her beneath the waves
and she could never walk the shore with him.
though their souls were one, this love could not be
then one night he decided that he would die in her arms
and be together forever under the sea.
In the end she dragged him to the shore where they died side by side.
