A Promise Made

a promise made long ago when we were young and foolish

flowers so carefully pressed
fast between milky white pages
once so sweet and fragrant
forgotten now in books.
lost to seasons grown old and cold
while laughter hidden behind
peacock blue green feathers.
faintly can still be heard
amid the swirl of embroidered gowns.
that rustle in empty dusty ballrooms
to music no longer played

a promise made long ago when we were young and foolish

love letters once read and reread
folded over and over.
tattered pale rose scented pages
hidden in brocade and silver boxes.
dance cards filled with but one name
long since yellowed
misplaced in trunks somewhere in the past
buried deep this love, his name unspoken.

a promise made long ago when we were young and foolish

sweet vows spoken in a whisper
sighs linger yet awhile just down the hall.
shadows dance in empty rooms as they
promised endless love and devotion
have as most things do,dim with time and age
when youths bloom was just a dream.

a promise made long ago, remembered not when we were young and foolish
